Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: Which Should You Choose?

Static QR codes are permanent and free, but dynamic codes let you change the destination, track scans, and run A/B tests — all after printing.

What Is a Static QR Code?

A static QR code encodes information directly into its pattern. The content is permanent — once printed, you cannot change it. If you encode the URL `https://example.com/menu-spring-2025` and that page moves, every printed code becomes broken.

When static QR codes make sense:

  • WiFi passwords (SSID and password don't change often)
  • vCards / contact information
  • One-time event codes (concert ticket, boarding pass)
  • Personal use (linking to your personal site)

What Is a Dynamic QR Code?

A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL (like `qr-generators.com/r/abc123`). When scanned, the scanner hits that redirect URL, which sends them to your actual destination. You control what the redirect points to — and you can change it any time.

What dynamic QR codes unlock:

  • Edit the destination after printing. Changed menus, new pages, seasonal campaigns — update without reprinting.
  • Track every scan. See how many people scanned, when, from where (country, city), on what device, and with what browser.
  • A/B test destinations. Route 50% of scanners to landing page A and 50% to B. See which converts better.
  • Set schedules. Activate a Black Friday code at midnight automatically. Deactivate it at 11:59pm.
  • Password-protect. Gate premium content behind a password.

The "But dynamic codes expire" Concern

Some services pause or expire dynamic codes when you cancel a subscription. QR Generators keeps your codes active — we do not retroactively break printed materials.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose static if: You need a one-time, no-tracking QR code for personal use or a small permanent installation.

Choose dynamic if: You're printing for business, marketing campaigns, product packaging, restaurant menus, or anything where data or the ability to update matters.

For most business uses, dynamic is the right default. The small monthly cost is trivially offset by the ability to update a menu without reprinting 500 table tents.
