10 QR Code Design Rules for Maximum Scan Rates
Color, contrast, size, error correction level — these factors determine whether your QR code gets ignored or scanned. Data from 3.8M+ scans.
Rule 1: Contrast Is Non-Negotiable
The single biggest cause of QR code scan failure is insufficient contrast between the foreground (dots) and background. The scanner must distinguish them clearly.
Safe contrast ratios:
- Black on white: always works
- Dark navy on white: works
- Dark color on light color: usually works
- Light on dark (inverted): works if contrast ratio ≥ 4.5:1
Never do this:
- Red on green (colorblind users fail to scan)
- Yellow on white
- Gray on white
Rule 2: Keep It Simple Enough to Scan
QR codes have four error correction levels: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), H (30%). Higher = more data redundancy = more complex pattern = harder to scan quickly.
If you're adding a logo (which obscures part of the code), use Level H. Otherwise, Level M is the sweet spot between reliability and simplicity.
Rule 3: Minimum Print Size
- Paper / small print: 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm (1 inch × 1 inch) minimum
- Posters: 5 cm × 5 cm for normal scanning distance
- Billboards: 8-10 cm for 3m scanning distance
There's no maximum size. Larger QR codes scan faster because the camera has more pixels per module to work with.
Rule 4: Give It a Quiet Zone
The quiet zone is the white border around a QR code. It tells the scanner where the code begins and ends. The minimum quiet zone is 4 module widths (the width of one QR dot × 4).
Never trim the quiet zone. Never let design elements overlap the border.
Rule 5: Don't Over-Customize the Eyes
The three corner squares (finder patterns / "eyes") are what the scanner uses to orient the code. Aggressive custom eye shapes can confuse scanners. Test heavily before committing to a wild eye design.
Safe: rounded corners, slight color variation. Risky: completely custom geometric shapes.
Rule 6: Logo Size Limit
A logo can cover up to 30% of a QR code (with High error correction). Beyond 30%, scan failure rates spike. The sweet spot is 20-25%.
If your logo has a white background, that's fine — it disappears visually. If it has a colored background, use a white frame/ring around the logo to improve contrast at the boundary.
Rule 7: Use Color Thoughtfully
Colored QR codes scan better than expected when done right. The key: dark dots on a light background, not the other way around.

Rule 8: Test on Multiple Devices
iOS and Android camera apps, Google Lens, and QR scanner apps all use different algorithms. A code that scans on iPhone may fail on a budget Android. Test on at least:
- iPhone (latest + 3 generations old)
- Android flagship
- Budget Android (low camera quality)
Rule 9: Include a Call-to-Action
A QR code alone is ambiguous. "Scan me" tells people what to do. "Scan for our menu" tells them why. "Scan for 20% off" tells them why AND gives them a reason to do it now.
Best CTA patterns:
- "Scan for [specific benefit]"
- "Scan to [action]"
- Include a short URL as fallback (e.g., "or visit example.com/offer")
Rule 10: Test the Printed Version
Screen-to-print color shift is real. A code that looks high-contrast on screen may print muddy on recycled paper with a low-DPI printer. Always:
1. Print a test sheet before your full run
2. Scan the printed version in varying light conditions
3. Test at the minimum expected scanning distance
